BERLIN, Conn. April 16, 2012Rockville High School in Vernon is the winner of the 2011-12 Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) Live Green – Win Green competition, earning the school a $20,000 grant to fund future environmental improvements at the school. Last year's winner, Danbury's Henry Abbott Technical High School, was selected as a runner-up, along with Hartford's A.I. Prince Technical High School and Howell Cheney Technical High School in Manchester. Each will get a $5,000 grant for their future environmental projects. Last month, Abbott Tech also earned "People's Choice" honors in online voting and an automatic spot in the finals.

The Rockville High entry was chosen the winner for the quality of its video and essay, which features a plan to build a science, technology, engineering and mathematics laboratory at the school.

“There were 16 entries and just as in previous years, the judges had some really tough choices to make, ” said Jim Muntz, CL&P president and chief operating officer. "Rockville was a runner-up last year and said they would be back. Congratulations to them for being chosen this year's winner and congratulations to Abbott, Prince and Cheyney Tech for their outstanding entries too. Once again, all of the schools did a great job."

The CL&P Live Green – Win Green contest was open to all high schools within CL&P’s service area. It encourages students to consider sustainable, environmental projects designed to make their schools operate in a more environmentally beneficial manner. Students were challenged to demonstrate in a two-minute video and accompanying essay what their school currently does to conserve energy and be more environmentally responsible, and to propose a significant future “green” project they would like to implement at their school.
