Northeast Utilities announces leadership promotion in power transmission business

BERLIN, Connecticut, October 23, 2008 – Northeast Utilities (NYSE: NU) today announced James A. Muntz was promoted to president, Transmission, effective November 1, 2008. He has overall leadership and management responsibility for NU’s transmission operations in Connecticut, New Hampshire and western Massachusetts and will continue to report to Lee Olivier, NU executive vice president and chief operating officer.

“Jim Muntz has effectively managed transmission engineering, construction and maintenance since 2005 and has been responsible for the successful completion of major transmission projects across our three-state franchise,” said Olivier. “This move recognizes his industry-leading expertise that has enabled NU to complete several major transmission projects ahead of schedule, including our nearly $2 billion investment in the construction of new major transmission lines in southwest Connecticut.”

“NU has a strong track record of successfully building solutions to the reliability challenges that face our customers and New England. The region now faces the challenge of the significant targets it has set for increased renewable power and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Meeting those goals will require creating transmission access to renewable and low-carbon emitting sources that exist in the northern part of the region,” said Charles W. Shivery, NU chairman, president and chief executive officer. “With one of the nation’s leading electric transmission construction programs, NU will continue to invest in building transmission connections to meet our customers’ and the region’s needs.”

Muntz, 50, most recently served as senior vice president, Transmission. He joined NU in 2002 as vice president of customer operations for Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P), an NU company, where he was responsible for the operation and maintenance of CL&P’s electric power distribution system and the System Operations Center. Before joining NU, Muntz held various leadership positions with the Exelon Corporation in Pennsylvania, including vice president of electric supply and transmission.

Muntz graduated from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Muntz also earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration in Financial Management from Drexel University.
