CL&P Upgrades Transmission Lines in Manchester
Project completed on budget and ahead of schedule

BERLIN, Conn., October 22, 2012 — Innovative use of technologies by Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P), combined with the mild weather last winter, contributed to the early completion of a 2.7-mile transmission line reliability upgrade between West Center Street and Burnham Street in Manchester, well ahead of schedule.

CL&P used helicopters to reduce environmental impacts by airlifting trees out of sensitive wetlands on the transmission right-of-way. The company also strung new transmission lines by helicopter over a busy interstate highway corridor to minimize impact to commuters. In addition, the use of imploding connectors on the transmission lines provided quicker, stronger and more electrically efficient connections over conventional connector methods.

“Transmission line upgrades like this one are crucial to the ongoing reliability of the electric grid in Connecticut,” said David Boguslawski, Vice President of Transmission Strategy & Operations at Northeast Utilities, parent company of CL&P. “We appreciate the cooperation and patience shown by Town of Manchester officials, residents and local businesses as we worked on this important improvement.”

This $28.8 million system reliability upgrade, which was completed on budget, consists of a new 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission line on steel monopoles, reconfiguration of an existing 345-kV line, and modifications to the Manchester substation. Project work site restoration will continue through November 2012.
