CL&P Uses New Technology to Repair Transmission Lines
BERLIN, Connecticut, March 21, 2007
— The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P), part of the Northeast Utilities System (NYSE: NU), is strengthening high-voltage transmission lines in Norwalk and Westport using a splice technology and maintenance method that is new to southern New England. The state-of-the-art process enhances the CL&P transmission system to provide safe and reliable electricity for customers.
As part of this work, repairs are being conducted Thursday, March 22, on a transmission tower near the intersection of Maple Lane and Clayton Street, Westport.
In addition, repairs will be made on Friday, March 23, on a transmission structure near Charcoal Road off Highland Avenue in Norwalk. On Saturday, March 24, crews will move to work on structures near the Norwalk River north of the Washington Street bridge in Norwalk.
The upgrade calls for replacing old connectors, installed about 40 years ago, with new connectors. The work creates a sound that is similar to the final aerial burst of a commercial fireworks display.
Highly-trained crews are making these upgrades in a way that will not interrupt electric service to homes or businesses. This work is being conducted on some 100 miles of 345,000-volt lines in Connecticut and western Massachusetts. The process is safe and has been approved by federal, state and local officials.
