WMECo Moves Massive Autotransformer through Westfield

BERLIN, Conn., September 26, 2012 — It’s a sight to be seen. With police escort, a 197-thousand pound autotransformer will be hauled through Westfield Thursday night, September 27, 2012. The huge piece of electrical equipment will end its journey at Western Massachusetts Electric Company’s (WMECo) Pochassic Substation on Oakdale Avenue. The new equipment is part of the company’s ongoing effort to ensure the reliability of its electric transmission network. This work will not interrupt electric service to any homes or businesses in the area.

The move will happen after 10p.m. when traffic is light, to minimize any inconvenience to residents.
To expedite the equipment’s safe movement, Westfield police will impose a parking ban from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Crown Street, Murray Avenue and Oakdale Avenue.
