CL&P Submits 345-kV Transmission Upgrade Proposal to Regulators
Plan connects eastern Connecticut to electric superhighway

BERLIN, Conn., December 23, 2011 – Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) submitted an application today to the Connecticut Siting Council for a $218 million transmission solution that will improve transmission reliability in southern New England and provide direct access to readily available, less-costly and cleaner power sources.

“In addition to the reliability benefits, the proposed Interstate Reliability Project will bring critically needed economic benefits to Connecticut. First, it will create hundreds of new, local jobs at the height of construction and second, the upgraded infrastructure will generate significant new tax revenue to towns along the project route once it is complete,” said David Boguslawski, NU’s vice president of Transmission Strategy & Operations.

The Interstate Reliability Project is designed as a regional solution to a regional bulk power problem that will strengthen interconnections and relieve power constraints among Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. It is a collaborative effort between CL&P and National Grid, a utility company with a service territory in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The proposed Connecticut portion of the project route calls for upgrading transmission lines on 37 miles of existing transmission right-of-way between Lebanon and Thompson, and includes substation enhancements. The project will then extend through National Grid’s service areas in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

If approved by regulators, construction of the project is scheduled to begin in late 2013/early 2014, with the project scheduled to be in-service by late 2015. For additional information on the Interstate Reliability Project, please visit, or call 1-866-99NEEWS (1-866-996-3397).
