Northeast Utilities Receives Edison Award, the Edison Electric Institute’s Highest Honor
For southwest Connecticut transmission projects


BERLIN, Connecticut, June 24, 2009 – Northeast Utilities (NYSE: NU) today announced that the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) has awarded the company the 2009 Edison Award for its southwest Connecticut transmission projects. The Edison Award recognizes U.S. and international electric companies for outstanding leadership, innovation and advancement of the electric industry.

The southwest Connecticut transmission projects include Bethel-Norwalk, Long Island Replacement Cable, Glenbrook Cables and Middletown-Norwalk. EEI pointed out that prior to the transmission upgrades, southwest Connecticut was considered by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as one of the nation’s most severely congested areas. Bethel-Norwalk was completed and energized in 2006, and the others were completed and energized in 2008. Since completion, the Bethel-Norwalk line has generated more than $150 million in congestion-related savings. The Middletown-Norwalk line includes the world’s longest 345-kilovolt buried, solid-core cable at 24 miles, and the Long Island Replacement Cable project includes 11 miles of cable buried six feet under the sea bed.
