Media Advisory: Northeast Utilities to host networking event for area businesses


BERLIN, Connecticut, September 18, 2009 -- Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) and Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECO) – companies of Northeast Utilities (NU) – are hosting a networking event to bring together a diverse group of small contractors and supplier firms to explore possible business opportunities related to the New England East-West Solution (NEEWS) projects. These proposed high-voltage transmission upgrades will provide additional, reliable electric capacity and support the growing energy needs of area homes and businesses.

More than two dozen large contractors are exhibiting at this networking session. About 600 small, local and diverse subcontractor firms have been preliminarily screened and specifically invited to attend this special event. The focus of the day is on networking and information sharing.

This event demonstrates CL&P and WMECO’s commitment to our local communities. In addition, we will also be able to share the economic benefits the projects will produce. For example, an independent study showed that an estimated 3,000 new, local jobs will be created in the Connecticut and western Massachusetts areas during the peak NEEWS construction year alone.

Invited guests will receive an explanation of the upgrades, which are a group of large-scale transmission projects proposed for Connecticut and western Massachusetts. These projects represent a significant construction effort that will require the support of a wide variety of contracting and supplier firms.
