CL&P Hosts Construction Open Houses for Project to Strengthen the Region's Electric Transmission Grid

BERLIN, Connecticut, September 13, 2011 – Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) is hosting two public open houses next week to explain the construction of the Greater Springfield Reliability Project (GSRP) to residents and local businesses.  The public is invited to attend either of the two open house sessions.  Members of the CL&P project team will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.

“The construction open houses are part of our ongoing commitment to keep customers informed about CL&P’s work in the community,” said David H. Boguslawski, Northeast Utilities’ vice president of Transmission Strategy & Operations.  “The events offer a unique opportunity for residents who live near the project to discuss the construction process one-on-one with the subject matter experts.”

Part of a group of transmission projects called the New England East-West Solution (NEEWS), the GSRP is designed to address transmission system reliability problems and meet more stringent federal and regional reliability standards.

The project will also allow power to move more freely in and around the north-central Connecticut and greater Springfield region and enhance access to lower-cost and renewable energy sources.  This $718 million upgrade includes work along 39 miles of existing transmission right-of-way, including 12 miles between Bloomfield, Conn., and the Massachusetts border, and continues from the Massachusetts border to Ludlow, Mass.  Other Connecticut towns along the project route include East Granby and Suffield.  [
Please see map below.]  Construction of the overhead section of GSRP is scheduled to begin in Connecticut in October 2011.  The project is expected to be in service in late 2013.
