WMECo Completing Enhancements to Owens Pond
Work will temporarily block some trails

AMHERST, Mass., May 2, 2013 — A section of hiking trail adjacent to Owens Pond in the Wentworth Farm Conservation Area will be closed for construction as crews repair storm damage to the pond outlet.

Hikers are asked to access the K.C. Trail from Kestrel Lane or from the south on Harvey Allen Trail. The K.C. trail will be temporarily closed near Old Farm Road from Monday, May 6 to June 7, 2013, weather permitting.

WMECo made improvements last year at Owens Pond which include redesigning the pond outlet, rebuilding about 140 feet of stream banks, installing a new foot bridge and creating more than 1,800 square feet of new wetland.

The work at the pond is part of a wetland mitigation plan stemming from a transmission line upgrade project completed in 2012 in Leverett and Montague, MA. Approvals for this wetland enhancement plan were obtained from the Town of Amherst Conservation Commission and the United States Army Corps of Engineers.

Shortly after WMECo completed improvements to Owens Pond last year, heavy rains damaged the banks of the outlet stream before plantings took root.

Customers with questions or concerns related to this work may call WMECo’s Transmission Information Line at 1-800-793-2202, or send an e-mail to TransmissionInfo@nu.com.
