Regulators Approve WMECo’s Upgrade from Agawam to W. Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 12, 2010 – Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECo) has received approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities for a transmission line project between Agawam and West Springfield. WMECo currently plans to break ground on this important system reliability project in early summer, pending receipt of other permits.

“We are pleased to be moving forward with this project that will upgrade the Springfield area’s transmission system and ensure its compliance with federal reliability standards. In addition, the project will strengthen the transmission connections that feed our distribution system,” said Peter Clarke, President and Chief Operating Officer of WMECo.

The $22 million upgrade will include rebuilding two 115-kilovolt (kV) circuits along 2.5 miles of an existing transmission right-of-way (ROW) between substations in Agawam and West Springfield.

Both 115-kV circuits, which are now located on a single row of structures, will be separated and relocated on two rows of new structures. Separation improves reliability and reduces the potential for any single incident to affect both circuits.
