Dubbed "Operation Happy New Year," the project originated in Northeast Utilities' Transmission Services area. "One of our team members received an e-mail from a friend at West Point which had a 'wish list' from a soldier who had just returned from Afghanistan," said David H. Boguslawski, vice president, Transmission Business. "We knew this would be a great project to build team spirit within the Transmission Business, while also supporting our troops abroad. Shortly after announcing the project, we began receiving donations from co-workers at Western Massachusetts Electric Company and Public Service of New Hampshire. And as word spread, all parts of NU got involved. Everybody really came through."
A total of 44 packages were mailed from Berlin to New York before being flown to Afghanistan. Among the food items sent are powdered drink mixes, hard candy, puddings and dessert items that do not require refrigeration, cans of tuna and chicken, snacks and homemade cookies. Lip balm, sun block, fly swatters, white athletic socks, eyedrops and diaper wipes are also on their way, as are whiffle balls and bats, soccer balls, books, magazines, CD's and videotapes of sporting events.
"There are so many things we take for granted that our fighting men and women don't have easy access to over there," adds Boguslawski. "We hope these packages help to make things more bearable for them and to serve as a reminder that what they are doing means a great deal to all of us back home."
