WMECo Hosts Construction Open Houses in Greater Springfield Area

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., November 3, 2010 – Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECo) will be hosting a series of construction open houses for customers interested in learning more about the Greater Springfield Reliability Project, a transmission upgrade planned for five towns in the area.

This upgrade includes work along 39 miles of an existing transmission right-of-way between Ludlow, Mass., and Bloomfield, Conn. The 27-mile portion in Massachusetts includes new 345-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines, new and reconstructed 115-kV lines, two new switching stations and substation upgrades. Massachusetts towns along the project route include Agawam, Chicopee, Ludlow, Springfield and West Springfield, Mass.

“The construction open houses are part of our ongoing commitment to keep customers informed about WMECo’s work in the community,” said Peter Clarke, President and Chief Operating Officer of WMECo. “The events offer a unique opportunity for residents who live near the project to discuss the construction process one-on-one with the subject matter experts.”

The open houses will be held in November. The public is invited to attend any of the four sessions. (Please see the schedule below for the specific time, dates and locations of the events.)

Work on the upgrade will start in Massachusetts later this year at a new switching station in Springfield, with overhead line construction expected to begin in early 2011. The project is expected to be in service in 2013.

The Greater Springfield Reliability Project is part of four transmission projects called the New England East-West Solution (NEEWS). Together these projects strengthen the reliability of the power grid within the regional transmission system by ensuring that national and regional reliability standards are met.
